Phase I Interceptive Treatment
Expanders
What They Are:
Palatal expanders widen the upper jaw to correct crossbites or make room for crowded teeth, especially in growing children.
How They Work:
A small key is used to gradually turn the expander, gently pushing the jaw bones apart over time.
What to Expect:
- Light pressure after activation
- A gap may form between front teeth (normal!)
- Worn for a few months, then stabilized
Care Tips:
Brush well, avoid sticky foods, and follow your orthodontist’s instructions.

Bite plates
What They Are:
Bite plates are removable or fixed appliances that correct deep bites by keeping back teeth apart, helping the bite open properly.
How They Work:
They guide jaw growth and reduce front tooth overlap by preventing full tooth contact.
What to Expect:
- May feel bulky at first
- Wear as directed (usually full-time)
- Improves bite alignment over time
Care Tips:
Clean daily and avoid playing with it using your tongue.
Space maintainers
What They Are:
Space maintainers hold open the space left by early tooth loss, allowing adult teeth to come in properly.
Why They’re Needed:
They prevent shifting and crowding that can affect future tooth alignment.
What to Expect:
- Easy to place
- Worn until permanent teeth erupt
- Regular check-ups to monitor
Care Tips:
Avoid sticky foods, brush carefully, and report any issues.
